Metro service to be suspended in 2027 – Timing of service break confirmed

The replacement of the Junatie metro bridge will require the suspension of metro service for approximately seven months in 2027. This suspension will last from 3 May to 8 December 2027.

During this period, the metro will run from the west to Hakaniemi and from the east to Herttoniemi. HSL Helsinki Region Transport is planning a replacement service for the duration of the metro service interruption, details of which will be announced later this year.

Closure of Kalasatama metro station shortened

Kalasatama metro station will be closed from 26 April to 15 December 2027 due to construction work on the metro bridge. The station will be closed during the metro service interruption, as well as one week before and one week after this period. During these two weeks, metro trains will pass the station without stopping. 

The closure period for the metro station has been significantly shortened compared to earlier estimates. The previous estimate was that the station would have to remain closed for several months both before and after the metro service interruption. During the project’s development stage, work techniques were discovered for the demolition of the current bridge that have reduced the station’s closure time from the previous estimate. During the development stage, it was confirmed that the platform bridges at the metro station do not need to be demolished, as the deck structures of the current bridge will be removed by sliding them out in large sections from between the platform bridges.

Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd will make extensive use of the metro service suspension to renovate metro infrastructure. In addition to the Junatie metro bridge, work is being carried out on five other metro bridges, as well as at the Sörnäinen and Kulosaari metro stations.
