Kulosaari station to be renovated during metro service suspension
Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd will be renovating Kulosaari metro station in 2027. The renovation involves refurbishing and repairing the escalators, lighting, ceiling and wall surfaces and technical systems of the station.
The renovation of Kulosaari metro station is scheduled for 2027, which will allow the works to take advantage of the suspension of metro services between Herttoniemi and Hakaniemi that is necessary for the replacement of the Junatie metro bridge. The renovation of the metro station will be carried out during the suspension, as the work would otherwise cause significant disruption to station users.
The Board of Helsinki City Transport approved the project plan for the renovation of Kulosaari metro station at its meeting on 26 August 2026.
Renovation to improve the station’s safety, energy efficiency and passenger comfort
The lighting in the metro station’s platform area, ticket hall and entrance hall will be replaced to improve the energy efficiency, safety and overall appearance of the station.
The station’s escalators will be refurbished and their worn parts replaced. The refurbishment will ensure the smooth running of passenger services.
The station’s roof and wall glazing will be repaired, and the surface of the platform will be resurfaced in the uncovered section of the platform area. The station’s electrical and HVAC systems will be repaired, and equipment that has reached the end of its service life will be replaced. In addition to this, passenger signage will be improved as part of the renovation.
While the metro station is being renovated, the northern metro bridge at Kulosaari station, which is connected to the station, will also be repaired. Due to the demolition work required for the bridge repairs, the commercial and control room premises of the metro station will be rebuilt.
The underpass next to the ticket hall will be partially cordoned off as a construction site during the station renovation, but every effort will be made to ensure that any disruption to pedestrian traffic is kept to a minimum.
The construction site will be fully implemented as a low-emission site in accordance with the circular economy Green Deal agreement.
Metro stations and several bridges being renovated during metro service suspension
The Junatie metro bridge between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen will be replaced between 2026 and 2028. Because of this, metro services between Herttoniemi and Hakaniemi stations will be suspended from 3 May to 8 December 2027.
Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd. will utilise the suspension of metro services caused by the replacement of the Junatie metro bridge to renovate metro infrastructure. In addition to the works at Kulosaari metro station, Sörnäinen metro station will be renovated and the Kulosaari metro bridge, the Kulosaari pedestrian tunnel, the northern metro bridge at Kulosaari station and the Tupasaarentie metro bridge will be repaired and the Naurissalmi metro bridge will be replaced during the metro service suspension.
