Renovation of Pohjois-Haaga, Kannelmäki and Malminkartano train stations
In summer 2026, train transport will be completely suspended for roughly two months in the section between Huopalahti and Myyrmäki as Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd renovates three train stations.

Train transport will be completely suspended for roughly two months in the section between Huopalahti and Myyrmäki. The I and P trains will operate in both directions on the Helsinki–Tikkurila–Lentoasema–Myyrmäki route. During the transport suspension, trains will not stop at all at the Malminkartano, Kannelmäki and Pohjois-Haaga stations.
In addition to the general transport suspension, trains will run past the Malminkartano station on a single track without stopping for roughly two months, departing every 20 minutes instead of the normal 10 minutes.
HSL will provide substitute bus transport to the train stations of Pohjois-Haaga, Kannelmäki and Malminkartano. The exact duration and timing of the exceptional arrangements will be specified as the planning work progresses.
The stations were built in the 1970s, and although they have undergone renovations over the decades, some of the structures have reached the end of their service life. Furthermore, the stations fail to meet today’s accessibility requirements in their current state. The renovations will make the stations and their surroundings much more functional, safer, accessible and welcoming.
Transport operations started on the Martinlaakso track half a century ago. Back in the 1950s, the track was planned to be used for metro transport. However, due to financial, schedule-related and other reasons, the track was ultimately built for train use, and unlike the rest of the state railway network, the stations along the track remained the property of the cities involved – this is why Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd owns the train stations of Pohjois-Haaga, Kannelmäki and Malminkartano to this day.
Schedule

Malminkartano station will close on May 3rd, after which trains will pass Malminkartano station without stopping, but will continue to operate normally to Kannelmäki and Pohjois-Haaga stations.
There will be a service interruption from June 1st to August 9th, during which trains will not operate at all to Malminkartano, Pohjois-Haaga, or Kannelmäki stations. Trains will stop at Huopalahti and Myyrmäki.
Malminkartano station will reopen on September 7th, but passenger service in Malminkartano will be reduced from September 7th to October 4th.
Since the line is part of the Ring Rail Line (Kehärata), trains will operate normally on the Tikkurila side toward Helsinki Airport.
Replacement transport will be provided by HSL.
At the Pohjois-Haaga station, the platform area and its technology will be renovated. The platform surface and lights will be overhauled and the waterproofing of the platform structures will be repaired. Canopy and wall materials will be replaced and repaired as necessary. The technology and, where necessary, other structures of the station building will be upgraded.

In Kannelmäki, the station building will be demolished. The concrete edge elements and surface structures of the platform area, as well as some of the overpass structures, will be overhauled. The lighting, signage and accessibility of the station will be improved.
The Malminkartano train station tunnel will undergo concrete repairs throughout the entire tunnel area. First, all the technology, shotcrete and insulation layers will be removed. The rock surfaces will be surveyed and reinforced, and new water guidance routes will be built in the tunnel. The lights outside the tunnel will also be overhauled, and new waste bins and benches will be added to the station.

HSL will provide substitute bus transport during the train transport suspension. During the complete train transport suspension, the existing lines 37, 40 and 400 will operate more frequently than at present. Additionally, the terminus of line 52 will be moved from Kuninkaantammi to Myyrmäki. Substitute line 401X will operate between Myyrmäki and Pasila.
During times when only Malminkartano is without train transport, the terminus of line 41 will be moved from Pohjois-Haaga to Malminkartano. This change will provide a connection from Malminkartano to the nearest Ring Rail Line station towards the city centre.
Substitute transport arrangements by station:
Malminkartano:
- During the full train transport suspension, Malminkartano will be served by bus lines 30, 37 and 59. For the duration of the suspension, line 37 will operate more frequently than at present.

Furthermore, the stations fail to meet today’s accessibility requirements in their current state. The renovations will make the stations and their surroundings much more functional, safer, accessible and welcoming.
The work cannot be carried out with trains in operation, as the renovation will be comprehensive and extend to the electrified areas of the track, the surface structures of the stations and the load-bearing structures. The transport suspension has been minimised in the planning, and the construction work will be carried out as quickly as possible.
At the Pohjois-Haaga station, the platform area and its technology will be renovated. The stations will be closed during the transport suspension from 1 June to 9 August. After the suspension, construction work will continue in the station buildings and platform areas, limiting passenger access routes.

During the exceptional arrangements, travel times to destinations such as the Helsinki city centre will be longer than currently. Travelling to the city centre is considerably faster by train than by bus, so we recommend being prepared for longer travel times. Additionally, travelling to destinations such as Pasila may require a change of line, depending on the point of departure.
The exceptional arrangements for train transport will significantly affect the residents of Pohjois-Haaga, Kannelmäki and Malminkartano who currently travel by train. The effects will also extend to Vantaa and especially the residents of the Myymäki and Martinlaakso areas, depending on the point of departure.
In addition to train passengers, users of non-motorised transport may also have to use exceptional routes near the stations, e.g. on overpasses. The exceptional routes will be indicated with signage.
For more information on transport during the exceptional arrangements, please visit the HSL website, which will feature an information package on the exceptional train transport arrangements during the spring. The HSL Journey Planner will also provide up-to-date information on routes and schedules roughly one month in advance.
During the transport suspension caused by the station renovations, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which is responsible for the railway network, will renovate sites such as the railway bridge at the Pohjois-Haaga station and carry out minor maintenance work in the area affected by the station renovations.
During the same transport suspension, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency will also renovate the city rail bridge over Hämeenlinnanväylä between the Huopalahti and Ilmala stations. This will cause trains not to stop at the Valimo, Pitäjänmäki and Mäkkylä stations from 1 June to 9 August 2026. Additionally, train transport will be completely suspended west of Leppävaara for five weeks after Midsummer due to the construction of EspooRail Line, as was the case in 2024 and 2025.
