The Kalasatama metro service disruption in 2027
The Junatie metro bridge between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen will be replaced between 2026 and 2028. By estimate, the metro service between Herttoniemi and Hakaniemi stations will be shut down for about seven months in 2027.
The Junatie metro bridge between Kalasatama and Sörnäinen will be replaced between 2026 and 2028. According to initial estimates, there will be no metro service at all on the section between Hakaniemi and Herttoniemi during the replacement of the bridge.
The metro service will be suspended from late spring 2027 until late 2027. The current estimate is that this suspension will continue for seven months. During this period, the metro will run from the west to Hakaniemi and from the east to Herttoniemi.
The construction of the new bridge will also require significant changes at Kalasatama metro station. Kalasatama metro station will be closed during the service break, as well as for about two months before and two months after the suspension. Metro trains will pass the station without stopping, both before and after the break in the metro service.
The preparatory works for the replacement of the bridge will start in spring 2026. The start of the works will lead to traffic disruptions in the area.
HSL is planning a replacement bus service for the duration of the metro service suspension. It is estimated that the Kruunusillat tram link from Laajasalo to Hakaniemi should be open by then, supporting eastbound public transport when the station is closed.
Suspending the metro service is necessary
The Junatie metro bridge is in need of replacement. The bridge was originally designed according to the design guidelines of the 1970s and no longer meets current load-bearing requirements.
Recent inspections have revealed deficiencies in the load-bearing capacity of the bridge. In winter 2025, the bridge was outfitted with temporary supports as a risk management measure to allow the metro service to continue safely.
The bridge is currently safe to use, but a decision has been made to bring its replacement forward. The aim is to ensure that the bridge does not have to be closed unexpectedly. The replacement will be carried out in a systematic way, and carefully planned replacement services will be provided during the metro service suspension.
